Current Events (Academic Year 2023-2024)
Spring 2024
Regular (monthly) meetings will be held on Wednesdays between 6:00pm–7:00pm. The room that is reserved for our meetings this semester is DEH 130. We plan to have about one event per month (on average). For the exact days that we plan to meet each month, please see the table below. See you all there!

April 24 | Officer Elections | We plan to elect officers for SACM for the academic year 2024-2025. |
April 17 | Tri-Fold Making | The SACM team crafted a tri-fold poster to showcase our organization for upcoming events. |
April 10 | Devon Energy Talk | A University of Oklahoma alumnus, who works at Devon Energy, is coming to give a talk about his work and the company. |
March 29 | Picnic | A social gathering welcome to all! Meet and interact with the ACM as well as other students. Food will be provided. |
March 13 | Paycom Event | Amber Mcgee, responsible for recruitment at Paycom, and David Johnson, software development manager, will lead an event showcasing a day in the life of a software developer. |
February 28 | Trivia Night | Social night playing Kahoot!, eating pizza, and having fun! Thanks to Emma Smith, our Treasurer for preparing the online trivia for us! |
February 10 | Hacklahoma Talk | Dr. Dimitris Diochnos gave a talk with an overview of machine learning in Hacklahoma 2024. |
February 7 | Github Workshop | Preston Roesslet, a full stack developer for O'Reilly Auto Parts and the Cooperative Institute for Severe and High Impact Weather Research and Operations will be hosting hosting an introduction to Github, along with Git commands. |
January 31 | Introduction to Cloud Computing, by Mr. Ian Betram, Computer Scientist (45 minutes) | Cloud infrastructure and cloud-native technologies allow small teams to produce software with less hassle. Learn a bit about how cloud technologies work, what problems they solve, and what challenges a cloud technology user still needs to overcome. This event will be held in the GLG 127. Pizza will be served in the GLG Atrium at 5:30. |
January 31 | Working at Tinker AFB in the 76th Software Engineering Group, talk by Mr. Robert Hogue and Dr. Ben Carlson (15 minutes) | Hear about cutting edge opportunities in software and hardware at the 76th Software Engineering Group. We are 1800 employees and growing rapidly. This event will be held in the GLG 127. Pizza will be served in the GLG Atrium at 5:30. |

November 15 | Fractals | We plan to have the talk on fractals by the graduate student Tashfeen which was disrupted due to a tornado warning last spring. |
October 25 | Computational Methods and AI for Single Cell Omics and Applications in Cancer Research | Dr. Marmar Moussa will review key computational approaches for the new and groundbreaking single cell technologies and highlight their applications in cancer biology and cancer immunology. |
October 18 | Building a Simple Portfolio In React | Discussion on building a simple portfolio in React, by Mark Glose (Paycom software development team lead). The relevant GitHub repository is available here. |
September 22 | Engineering Engaged! | SACM will be represented in the new program by Engineering Pathways, called Engineering Engaged! explaining our mission, goals, and activities. We hope to see you there! |
September 20 | General Meeting | We plan to have a general meeting for the new year, polling students for events and topics they would be interested during the coming year, as well as holding elections for officers that will be serving OU SACM during the academic year. |
August 21 (5pm-7pm) | Howdy Week Fair | We will be in the South Oval, on 8/21/2023, between 5pm-7pm. We will have a table and we will provide information to students regarding our activities and how they can join our student organization (using QR codes for simplicity). |

April 19 | Fractals | Talk on fractals by the graduate student Tashfeen. The talk was disrupted soon after it started because we had a Tornado warning a few minutes after the event started. March 22 | Pizza and Trivia Night | Social night playing Kahoot!, eating pizza, and having fun! Thanks to Emma Smith, our Treasurer and Secretary for this academic year, who prepared the online game for the event! |
March 8 | Introduction to Social Network Analysis using R and Gephi | Tutorial on social network analysis with examples using the R programming language, as well as Gephi. The tutorial was offered by Dr Katia Papakonstantinopoulou. |
February 22 | Intro to R | Introduction to the R programming language by the graduate student Khoi Trinh. This was an event organized jointly with the OU AI Club. |
February 8 | General Meeting | Resuming for spring. Ideas for activities during spring and prioritizing what to do when. |
